Fresh Plaza: Ontario garlic has moved beyond its cottage industry persona.

Ontario’s garlic industry has been growing commercially since the early 80’s, being held back only by knowledge. A decade later a few but fervent growers, including The Garlic Box, emerged to facilitate full-scale production and growth of this one-time cottage industry. The Honourable Kathleen Wynne awards The Garlic Box the Premiere's Award for "Leaders in Innovation"


Jackie and Jim Rowe of The Garlic Box were awarded the 2014 "Leader in Innovation" award for their leading-edge innovation of IQF garlic cloves. The convenient flash frozen peeled garlic cloves provide customers with Ontario garlic year-round. The innovation demonstrates The Garlic Box's commitment to the ongoing success of Ontario's world-class agri-food industry. The achievement was recognized at the Premier's Summit on Agri-Food, Queens Park, Toronto, November 27th.

The Garlic Box receives recognition for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence in Guelph

Ontario is celebrating local innovators who are contributing to the success of the province's agri-food sector.

The regional recipients of the Premier's Award for Agri-food Innovation Excellence were celebrated and honoured November 13th at a ceremony in Guelph for their contributions to the creation of new products, adding value to existing products, helping support job creation, and building economic growth in Ontario. The Garlic Box, Hensall was a Huron County award recipient. Ontario's agri-food sector supports farmers, communities and the economy - employing more than 760,000 Ontarians and contributing over $34 billion to the province's economy.

The Garlic Box Inc. has been assessed and approved to establish a freezing process for Ontario garlic cloves that pathfinds a solution to a finished quality product.  Trials will begin in September with this year’s harvest at Southcoast IQF in Delhi. Southcoast is a state-of-the-art freezing facility specializing in fast freezing local produce.  Northland Garlic farms of Durham is working in cooperation with The Garlic Box.

The ability to freeze peeled garlic cloves for consumer and food service use offers a solution to the new and emerging issue to buy local in the food sector by making Ontario garlic available year around. 

The investment in this project is intended to promote agri-food innovation and diversification.  An estimated ½ million pounds of garlic were harvested in Ontario this year.  The Garlic Box Inc is a garlic grower, processor, wholesaler and a member of the Ontario Garlic Growers Association (OGGA).  

Investment in this project has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP). In Ontario, this program is delivered by the Agricultural Adaptation Council.
